Snug Hollow Part 2: Weekend Getaway

For today’s post, we will continue exploring our weekend getaway to Snug Hollow Farm in Irvine, Kentucky.  Please enjoy reading about Snug Hollow from the perspectives of my dear friend’s Joanna and Amanda!  I think you will find these ladies both entertaining and informative.

Joanna:

Of the four girls, I was the most apprehensive- nature, out in the middle of nowhere and VEGETARIAN!! Point one-Nature.  I should specify, nature I don’t mind….except for bugs-the creepy crawlies that will find their way into every crevice imaginable and scare you &@?$less.  Well, I lucked out on the buggies-just a few curious bumble bees but they were cool and mostly kept to themselves. No harassment charges needed to be filed, thankfully. Point two- Middle of Nowhere. Okay, this kinda bit when it came to cellphone service, but all was well because one of the group did have service so we could let family members know we made it safely and soundly to Snug Hollow.  But the pay off to the middle of nowhere was at night-stars, billions of them. Carl Sagen would have given it a thumbs up for sure!  This more than made up for the lack of cell towers.  Point three-VEGETARIAN!  I apologize for using such extreme language, but it was called for in this case. I L-💖-V meat!  Steak, chicken, bacon…don’t get me started on bacon. I learned that we were doing breakfast there on both mornings and then later found out …dinner?!?  What…no, not dinner…but what about meat…my yummy, yummy meat?  I was mostly quiet about this news.  Ok, not really!  I did whine-but this was for some great girls, so I grinned and bore it with gritted teeth approaching shark clamp strength. Thank goodness my mother gave my her strong teeth genes.  Breakfast, I figured, would be OK as long as they had eggs and potatoes and typical breakfast fare. Well, they did not disappoint. Both breakfasts were absolutely incredible!!!  So freaking tasty!  Blueberry pancakes and poached eggs headlined the first breakfast.

Dinner, this is where I feel we were in danger Will Robinson.  But I was so unbelievably pleasantly surprised. Soo flipping good!!!  Soo satisfying!!!  Soo filling!!!  Vegetarian lasagna with fresh made  garlic bread and tossed salad with homemade dressing.

Amanda:

Coming upon this remote holler in Kentucky, complete with babbling brook and the sweet twinkling of white lights to welcome us, was like living in a romance novel. I felt like Nora Roberts created this place herself and I was pretty sure there was going to be a super hot groundskeeper to startle me the next morning. It was going to be the start of a great love affair. But instead of a hot gardener it was a former hippie showing us some major love with every aspect of perfect and welcoming hospitality. The girls have already told you about the food and the lovely property so let me just tell you my other favorite parts. After breakfast was served- Barb came into the dining room to join us. She pulled that chair right up to the corner of the table and plopped her plate right down. I appreciated that this was a beautiful bed and breakfast but it was also her home. And she was comfortable and graceful enough to sit right down and eat with us as though we were friends.

A quick mention that this was the PERFECT location for a girls trip because, while the cabin had sleeping options in spades, the loft was the arrangement of my Seven Brides for Seven Brothers/compound loving/commune hopeful dreams. It had two full beds and two twin beds arranged in pretty pairs enabling us all to sleep in the same room together! Just picture this: four grown women all giggling and laughing and having a ball. If I could have gotten them all to learn music from the above mentioned film so we could perform a choreographed dance- I would have!! It was very Little House on the Prairie, and I loved it.

There’s a secondhand book store filled to bursting with all kinds of titles. “How to Toilet Train Your Cat”, anyone? It’s definitely worth a look.  (P.S. In Cincinnati, we have pigs, in Berea, they have hands).

Nothing was rushed and you’re welcomed to join them in the studio to watch the process happen! From throwing pottery, to drying, to firing and more. They have cats and dogs in spades so you can get a snuggle in while you’re there.

Only three hours south of Cincinnati, Snug Hollow is wonderful retreat in the picturesque hills of Eastern Kentucky.  I can only imagine how beautiful it would be in the fall when all the leaves have changed colors, or in the winter, when it’s blanketed with snow.  No matter when you visit, this is a place to unplug and relax!  Barbara is a great host and I’d love to listen to more of her stories.
